Summary:
This book is an authentic account of the life the Apaches from our earliest historical knowledge of them up to the present day. The author spent twelve years as a teacher on both of the Apaches reservations in Arizona, in three varied representative sites, and she had the unique opportunity to observe firsthand of the Apaches in both preserving the heritage that is theirs and adopting the white man way of life. She discusses the history of the Indian wars without bias and provides thumbnail sketches of the important Indian and white leaders. She goes on to outline her experiences as a teacher and the observations which she as one living in the Indian community was able to make. These include a wealth of fascinating and accurate descriptions of Apache religion, attitudes, character, government, ceren.onies, handicrafts and medicine. Some of her discussions of food preparation and sewing instruction are so vivid that they could be used as recipes and patterns for anyone wishing to duplicate the authentic crafts. The book is informatively and attractively illustrated with original art By William Cole. Because her primary source is first-hand observation, Author Burlison is able to include many facts of the Apaches? life and customs that were not heretofore reported in other literature about them.
